Why Do I Need To Treat Recession?
Gum recession is one of the most noticeable side effects of untreated periodontal disease. Gum recession is the movement of the gum line down the root of a tooth and can result in extreme root sensitivity, inflammation of the gum tissue, root exposure, cavities, and aesthetic concerns. Recession can be limited to just one tooth or many and for most people is concerning only in an aesthetic way.
However, treating gum recession is more than just an aesthetic concern. Without the gum tissue to protect the roots, exposed tooth roots are susceptible to bacteria that cause gum disease, bone and gum deterioration, and eventually tooth loss.
What Can I Expect During Gum Grafting?
There are many types of gum grafting procedures – from Pinhole Surgical Technique to traditional gum grafting – and the technique Dr. Singh uses will depend on your unique situation. During a traditional gum grafting procedure, donor gum tissue is used to cover the exposed tooth root. Donor tissue can come from your mouth or another organic donor such as engineered grafting materials or bovine. The donor tissue is placed and attached to the area being treated where it will grow together with the existing gum tissue, forming a healthier gum line around the tooth.
