Half of American Adults Have Periodontal Disease

Recently the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention published new and important findings that directly impact our patients’ health and may change the way we practice dentistry. Current Concepts in the Maintenance of Periodontal and Implant Patients

Many dental professionals use the terms prophylaxis and periodontal maintenance synonymously. This can cause confusion for the patient and devalue the services we are providing. At Periodontal Implant Associates, we treat periodontal maintenance as an extension of active periodontal therapy. We initiate periodontal maintenance 3 months after surgical or nonsurgical periodontal therapy. We adhere to guidelines that have been proven to help patients experience less attachment loss and lose fewer teeth.

Indications and Benefits of Osseous Surgery

Many dentists and dental hygienists have difficulty determining when a patient could benefit from osseous surgery. Frequently, a patient will present with bleeding and inflammation following initial periodontal therapy (scaling and root planing), and will be considered unstable based on their clinical assessment. It is our responsibility to recognize patients that have not responded to other treatments, such as, periodontal debridement, scaling and root planing and/or local chemotherapeutics.

Root Canal Treatment or Apicoectomy?

When the pulp of the tooth becomes infected or dies, root canal therapy is the recommended treatment to save the tooth. Traditional endodontic therapy in teeth with a favorable prognosis typically will rectify the problem. In some cases, root canal therapy does not heal the tooth or more likely the tooth may become reinfected and additional treatment may become necessary at a later time.
